General information

The Doctorate of Business Administration is the job integrated doctoral program for highly motivated young academics with up to five years work experience in all relevant fields. EBS offers the DBA program since 2003. Each doctorate is based on an autonomous research project which focuses either on SISP’s research topics leadership, personality and innovation or on a company specific issue.

  • Target group: High performers with Master’s degree or equivalent, up to five years of work experience and excellent English language skills
  • Degree: Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
  • Duration: min. 6 semester, start is possible any time
  • Program is offered in cooperation with Edinburgh Business School (EBS) of Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, UK (degree awarding university)
  • Either financing by student or financing by company
  • Course work includes distance learning courses and on campus seminars which take place on the campus either at Edinburgh or Dubai
Program

The duration of the doctoral program is at least three years. The program consists of two stages, the Course Stage and the Research Stage. During the Research Stage you complete the three distance learning courses Introduction to Business Research 1, 2 and 3. Each course has to be assessed by a written examination which can be completed in Germany. In addition to the distance learning program, EBS offers a preparatory seminar per course which lasts four days each and can be attended at one of the campuses of Heriot-Watt University at Edinburgh or Dubai. The aim of the seminars is a profound examination preparation while allowing you to expand your international network at the same time. During the Research Stage you already start a discussion with your supervisor about the topic of your doctoral project. After successful completion of all IBR courses, you will write a research proposal which you then submit to the Doctoral Review Committee (DRC) for approval.

Working under the guidance of your supervisor, you will then carry out your research and write your thesis. Each stage of your research must be developed to a level acceptable to the Doctoral Review Committee. Therefore, you submit a first manuscript after about two years (Intermediate thesis). On completion, your thesis is submitted for examination, which takes the form of an oral defense held at Edinburgh.

KODE® test

In case of your admission to the DBA program, you will perform the KODE® test. It serves as an instrument for competency diagnostics and development, and has been approved by an independent institute according to DIN 33430. It confronts you with situations that reflect on skills that are essential for everyday work life. The KODE® test gives us an overview of your competencies and experience so that we can make a sound decision on final admission to our DBA program. In addition, the test offers you a very good basis for your own strengths and weaknesses profile, which you can draw on in job interviews.
